This is the question I get asked the most before a session, and I completely understand why. Choosing outfits for your whole family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. My goal is to make your session fun and stress-free, starting with outfits that look beautiful in photos and still feel like you.

Start With Neutrals
I always recommend starting with a neutral base. Soft creams, beige, warm browns, muted grays, and gentle earth tones are timeless and photograph beautifully in any setting. They also keep the focus on your family, not your outfits.
Add Layers and Textures
Textures bring photos to life. Think flowy dresses, knit sweaters, linen shirts, or corduroy pants. Layers, like a denim jacket or a cozy cardigan, can also give your photos more depth and movement while allowing you to mix and match during the session.
Don't Match, But Coordinate
Matching outfits can look a bit stiff, while coordinated tones look effortless and natural. Pick two or three colors that complement each other and weave them through everyone’s outfits. For example, if mom is wearing a soft cream dress, dad can wear tan chinos with a muted green shirt, and the kids can have touches of cream and olive. It creates a cohesive look that still feels relaxed.
Consider Your Location
Your backdrop matters when planning outfits. At the beach, lighter tones and flowy fabrics look effortless. In the fall with colorful leaves, warm earth tones like rust, olive, and cream photograph beautifully. For a lifestyle session at home, keep it casual and cozy to match your environment.
Comfort is Key
If your kids are uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Choose clothes that are soft, flexible, and easy to move in. A little one who can run, jump, and play freely will give you more natural smiles and candid moments.
Avoid Distracting Elements
Avoid bright neon colors, bold logos, or busy patterns. These can pull attention away from the emotions in your images and may look dated over time. Subtle patterns like small florals, light plaids, or delicate stripes are perfect choices.
Don't Forget The Details
Shoes, accessories, and hair make a bigger difference than you might think. Neutral-colored shoes always photograph best, and soft accessories like a hair bow, delicate jewelry, or a simple hat can elevate your look without taking attention away from your family.
Plan Ahead
Start planning early to avoid stress. Laying out outfits at least a week before your session gives you time to make adjustments. If you are unsure about what to wear, send me photos of your options. I am always happy to help you choose pieces that will look beautiful on camera and fit the setting for your session.
Be Yourselves
Above all else, wear what feels like you. The real magic happens when your family is relaxed and genuine. The right outfits will enhance the story of your session, but the moments we capture together — the laughter, the cuddles, the quiet little glances — are what make your photos truly timeless.
